Who Am I? What Made Me Fat?
My parents, as family business in Kuala Lumpur operated a canteen and later a coffee shop to sell Hainan coffee, Hainan toasted bread with butter and kaya, mixed vegetable rice, noodles, nasi lemak and Hainanese chicken rice. Since I was a little child, I was surrounded with delicious and irresistible food. However, I was still very skinny until I reached my teens where I took in a lot of fattening food like butter, soft drinks, rice, noodles etc and went without any exercise. Butter was my favorite, Magnolia bottled chocolate milk I like the most and soft drinks were my plain water.
I was overweight since I was in Form I, people used to call me “fat girl” or “fatty”. My self esteem was low. I was studying in co-ed school. I was very shy to wear shorts during P.E. lessons, cross country and sport days. My diet battle had not begun until I was in Form 6 when I reached 60 kg and my height is only 151 cm. My BMI was more than 25 and I was over weight.
